Introduction to Rugby

A general introduction to the sport of rugby.

Rugby League vs. Rugby Union
In 1895 the rugby was acrimoniously split into amateur (Rugby Union) and professional (Rugby League) divisions. In 1995 Rugby Union became a professional sport also. Over the years the rules for Rugby League and Rugby Union have evolved differently, and they are now considered two separate sports..

Rugby Union
A version of rugby with 15 players on a side. For many years this version of rugby was was amateur-only, but now is it professional.

Rugby League
A version of rugby with 13 players on a side.

Rugby Sevens
There are both Rugby Union and Rugby League versions of this rugby game with 7 players to a side.
